Abstract: This work evaluated the effect of the crude aqueous extract of the aerial parts of Solidago microglossa DC on the in vitro dissolution of rat blood clots and on the hydrolysis of Nα-benzoyl-D, L-arginine-para-nitroanilide. Blood samples from Wistar rats were treated with 5.0 µg of the crude lyophilized powder of S. microglossa per mg of blood, for 24 hours at 25 °C. After subtraction of the drug contribution, the contribution of the soluble solutes to the refractive index was significantly higher in the treated than in the untreated sera. After addition of ethanol, the drainage times were significantly higher for treated than for untreated sera. Under the experimental conditions used, there was no significant difference in the hemolysis rate between treated and untreated sera. The S. microglossa extract also exhibited a linear dose-dependent activity against Nα-benzoyl-D, L-arginine-para-nitroanilide. These observations indicate that S. microglossa is capable of promoting dissolution of blood clots, probably due to the action of amidase(s).
