Abstract: The chloroform extract of heartwood Pterocarpus santalinus Linn (Fabaceae) in 0.3 % carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) was evaluated for hepatoprotective activity in Wistar albino rats followed induced liver damage due to D-galactosamine. The chloroform extract was able to normalize the serum levels of aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, lactate dehydrogenase, total cholesterol, triglycerides, albumin, total protein levels which were significantly (P<0.001) altered by D-galactosamine intoxication. The in vivo hepatoprotective effect of the extract at 200 and 400 mg/kg was comparable to that of the standard treatment of Silymarin at 25 mg/kg body weight. The results from the present investigation were supported by histopathological findings that demonstrated regeneration of hepatocytes in treated animals, which was indicative of the protective effects of the extract.
