Abstract: The optimum combination of the control and regulation factors during cell culture was obtained and the possibility of producing total
flavonoids by means of a cell culture of Saussurea involucrata was investigated. The culture system was MS medium supplemented with 3.5
mg/L NAA, 0.55 mg/L 6-BA and 2 % sucrose. The medium pH was adjusted to 5.8, and the culture was carried out in a 2.5L airlift photobioreactor
at an aerating rate of 100 ml /min. Cells from the callus of S. involucrata were inoculated into the bioreactor at the concentration
of 2.5 g (DW)/L and cultured under 12 h of light per day at an intensity of 58 μmol/ m2· s at 24 ± 1℃ for 10 d. Under these conditions, the
production of total flavonoids in the cultured cells of S. involucrata was increased efficiently.
