Abstract: A simple, reliable and reproducible method, based on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), for developing a chromatographic fingerprint of the herbal medicine Radix Puerariae is described. To establish the analytical method for Radix Puerariae, fingerprints of 13 batches of P. thomsonii Benth. and 4 batches of Pueraria lobata (Willd.) from different places were studied and compared by means of “The Similarity Calculation Soft of Fingerprint Chromatography of Traditional Chinese Medicine”. The study also established the fingerprint for the herbs, and some peaks were assigned by comparison with reference compounds. The precision, reproducibility and stability all satisfied the requirements of national standards for fingerprint development. A method for the determination of the quality of the herbs was established. There is increasing interest in the use of the kudzu root (Radix Pueraria) dietary supplements. Standardization of the analytical method to establish fingerprints for each species and the effects of growing areas is needed.
