Abstract: A high performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for the simultaneous quantification of four major ingredients in the Sumbucus chinensis Lindl., namely chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid and ferulaic acid. The chromatographic separation was performed on a phenomenex C18 column (250×4.6mm, 5 µm) with gradient elution using methanol-0.05 % formic acid in water, and a detector wavelength of 326 nm. The linear ranges of the four compounds were 1.552-15.52 μg.ml-1 (r=0.9998), 0.0691-0.691 μg.ml-1 (r=0.9996), 0.148-1.48 μg.ml-1 (r=0.9997) and 0.174-1.74 μg.ml-1 (r= 0.9997), respectively. The recoveries of the four compounds were in the range 98.2 %-100. 7 %. The results indicated that this developed assay method was rapid, accurate, and reliable and could be readily used as a quality control method for the Sumbucus chinensis Lindl.
