Abstract: The volatile components of Rhizoma Pinelliae Fermentata and its unfermented production were extracted by the hydrodistillation method and chemical compositions that were responsible for the effect of the volatile oil were determined using the GC-MS technique. GC-MS analysis revealed that 41 compounds comprised 89.1 % of unfermented production of Rhizoma Pinelliae Fermentata volatile oil, with the main components being Octadec-9-enoic acid (26.4 %), n-Hexadecanoic acid (12.9 %), 1, 2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, diisooctylester (12.1 %), Hexanedioic acid, bis-(2-ethylhexyl) ester (8.3 %). In the volatile oil from Rhizoma Pinelliae Fermentata, 41 compounds comprised 93.2 % of the oil, and the main compounds were Octadec-9-enoicacid (40.7 %), 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z, Z) (21.2 %), n-Hexadecanoic acid (9.7 %). The qualitative study has been found different in the chemical composition of Rhizoma Pinelliae Fermentata and its unfermented production. This is the first report describing the volatile composition of this species and change of chemical composition.

Key words: volatile oil, hydrodistillation extraction, GC-MS
