Abstract: The recent global resurgence of interest in herbal medicines has led to an increase in the demand for them. Commercialization of the manufacture of these medicines to meet this increasing demand has resulted in a decline in their quality, primarily due to a lack of adequate regulations governing this sector of medicine. There is now a need to develop a systematic approach for the authentication of herbal plants and to develop well-designed methodologies for their standardization. Therefore, the present paper deals with the standardization of a well-known folklore remedy for chronic rheumatism using Justicia gendarussa Burm. The standardization is carried out from a pharmacognostic point of view involving phytochemical studies, physico-chemical studies, a qualitative study of metabolites using TLC and a preliminary HPTLC analysis of different extracts of the roots of J. gendarussa based on WHO guidelines. Hence, the present investigation was undertaken to investigate the standardization of J. gendarussa

Key words: Justicia gendarussa, Standardization, HPTLC analysis.
