Abstract: Panax ginseng has been traditionally regarded as having medicinal properties. However, reports are rare about the molecular
organization and sequence variation in the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) region, including the two internal transcribed spacers
(ITS1 and ITS2) between P. ginseng and its adulterants. The aim of this study is to evaluate the differences between P. ginseng
and its adulterants. Genomic DNA extracted from P. ginseng and its two adulterants were used as templates. The ITS regions
were amplified using a polymerase chain reaction. Sequence assembly was performed using DNAMAN Version 6.0.3.99 and
MEGA 5.0 software. The results obtained indicate that the ITS sequences could be used to identify P. ginseng and distinguish it
from its two adulterants.

Key words: Panax ginseng, adulterant, internal transcribed spacer, molecular identification
