Abstract: The ITS sequences of Schisandra chinensis cultivars from six different areas of China were amplified and sequenced. The genetic
relationship among these S. chinensis cultivars was established and compared to the cluster analysis of HPLC finger-printing.
The similarity among these S. chinensis sequences was 97.27%. Cluster analyses of Jinzhou and Huanren, Kuandian I and
Kuandian II based on ITS data was consistent with that of HPLC finger-printing. The cluster analyses in other areas had some
differences. Our results showed that the genotypic and phenotypic similarities among S. chinensis cultivars from the same or
adjacent areas had a higher similarity as compared to the cultivars located farther apart. Therefore, the cluster analysis of ITS
data showed that S. chinensis from Xinbin and Benxi regions was closer to the S. chinensis of real genotype differences than the
cluster analysis of HPLC finger-printing.
