Abstract: Four spirostane glycosides were isolated from the active part of water extract of Dioscorea septemloba, which showed antiosteoporotic activity. Their structures were identified as methylprotodioscin (1), trigofoenoside D-1 (2), glycoside D (3) and protogracillin (4) on the basis
of spectral methods. Among these compounds, 1 showed potent inhibition against bone resorption induced by parathyroid hormone in a bone organ culture system.

Key words: Dioscorea septemloba, spirostane glycosides, bone resorbing
