    2014 (5):  110-117.
    摘要 ( 286 )
Boswellia serrata extract (BSE) has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammatory diseases since antiquity.
11- keto- β - boswellic acid (KBA) and 3- O- Acetyl- 11- keto- β- boswellic acid (AKBA) are the two major active ingredients in
BSE. This study describes a simple and rapid HPLC method developed for quantification of KBA and AKBA in rat plasma after
administration of BSE. Separation was performed on a YMC-Pack ODS-A column (150 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) using a mobile
phase composed of acetonitrile and aqueous 0.5% phosphoric acid pumped at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min with gradient elution.
Detection was performed at a wavelength of 250 nm and the operating temperature was maintained at 35°C. The lower limits
of quantification were 0.1296 μg/ml, 0.1373 μg/ml for KBA and AKBA , respectively, and the intra - and inter-day precision and
accuracy of analytes were well within acceptance criteria (15%). The mean extraction recoveries of the analytes and IS from rat
plasma were all more than 85.0%. The validated method was successfully applied to determine the pharmacokinetic profiles of
    the analytes in rat plasma.

Pharmacognostical studies on Ehretia microphylla Lamk
    Aarthi V, Shakila R , Sasikala E, Pitchiahkumar M
    2014 (5):  118-129.
    摘要 ( 379 )
Ehretia microphylla Lamk. is a member of the Boraginaceae family and finds its use in the Siddha System of Medicine. Aim
of this study is to investigate the morphology, exo and endomorphic characters, powder analysis, preliminary phytochemical
analysis, pharmacopoeial standards such as physico-chemical parameter, TLC photo documentation and HPTLC finger print
of aerial parts. The results revealed the presence of an arc shaped collateral vascular bundles in the centre of the midrib and
discontinuous sclerenchyma fibres below the vascular bundle. The adaxial and abaxial epidermii are nearly identical in structure
but differ in their sizes. Presence of aerenchymatous spongy tissue, tanniniferous sacs and cluster crystals of calcium oxalate in
the mesophyll and 2 or 3 layered hypodermis and isolated strands of pericyclic fibres in the stem are characteristic features. The
powder showed abundant unicellular trichomes, foliar epidermal cells with anomocytic (ranunculaceous) stomata and druses of
    calcium oxalate crystals which are diagnostic characters to identify the drug. HPTLC finger printing showed 16 peaks at 254 nm;
the TLC photo documentation showed four visible spots under 254 nm, 8 spots under 366 nm and 4 spots after derivatization.

Molecular identification based on ITS sequencesfor Panax ginseng and its adulterants
    Yu Chen;Wei Xu;Peng Song;Xing Wei;Shukun Ma;Shiyi Xu *
    2014 (5):  130-135.
    摘要 ( 318 )
Panax ginseng has been traditionally regarded as having medicinal properties. However, reports are rare about the molecular
organization and sequence variation in the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) region, including the two internal transcribed spacers
(ITS1 and ITS2) between P. ginseng and its adulterants. The aim of this study is to evaluate the differences between P. ginseng
and its adulterants. Genomic DNA extracted from P. ginseng and its two adulterants were used as templates. The ITS regions
were amplified using a polymerase chain reaction. Sequence assembly was performed using DNAMAN Version 6.0.3.99 and
MEGA 5.0 software. The results obtained indicate that the ITS sequences could be used to identify P. ginseng and distinguish it
    from its two adulterants.
