    Quantitative Assessment of Germicidal Efficacy of Syzygium aromaticum Dried Flower Bud

    Syzygium aromaticum dried flower bud is widely used as a popular valued medicinal plant with a lot of biological functions. In order to investigate the germicidal efficacy of S. aromaticum dried flower bud, suspension quantitative germicidal test was carried out in the laboratory study. It was found that S. aromaticum dried flower bud showed an excellent antimicrobial effect in suspension exposed on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Escherichia coli ATCC 8099, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 9372, Canidia albicans ATCC 10231, and Aspergillius niger ATCC 16404. Our results could provide an experimental basis for the selection of appropriate germicidal natural products isolated from S. aromaticum dried flower bud in industrial factories and research laboratories.

    Evaluation of the quality consistency of Compound Liangmianzhen tablets using HPLC fingerprints for antioxidant activity

    HPLC coupled with diode array detector (DAD) was adopted to monitor the quality consistency of Compound Liangmianzhen tablets (LMZT). An overall integrated fingerprint assessment strategy was set up to reveal the whole information at different wavelengths, and 220 nm HPLC fingerprints as well as single maker component were determined, in combination of antioxidant activity detected by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The systematic quantitative fingerprint method (SQFM) was applied in the fingerprint assessments and we did mathematical separation for overlapping peaks which can’t be separated under chromatographic conditions before evaluation. The samples were all quantified and 11 kinds of components had antioxidant activity.

    Study on the preparation technology of Yangzheng chewable tablets

    The present investigation is aimed to determine the optimal formulation and preparation technology of Yangzheng chewable tablet, which is composed of Coriolus Versicolor, Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus. The optimal extraction of one of the ingredients Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus extract (SCFE) was performed by the total lignans and crude polysaccharide content verifying. The optimal formulation and preparation technology was determined as following: weighted the SCFE and Coriolus Versicolor polysaccharide 24 g totally in proportion respectively, mixed uniformly after adding dextrin 18 g, lactose 3 g, mannitol 3 g, aspartame 0.4 g and citric acid 0.4 g, prepared wet granules through stainless steel sieve of 16 meshes, and dried the wet granules at 50 °C. Then the dry granules were passed through 20 mesh screen and added talc 0.2 g uniformly, followed by compressing into 90 tablets with a single punch tablet press and coating in opadry. The preparation technology was proved to be reasonable, feasible and stable according to the weight variation and taste.

    Role of caspase-9 in anti-tumor activities by active compounds from natural products

    Plant-derived natural products have been proved to be an excellent source of lead compounds for anti-cancer drug discovery. The apoptotic mode of cell death is an active and defined process which is essential for the development of multicellular organisms and in the regulation and maintenance of the cell populations in tissues upon physiological and pathological conditions. Apoptosis plays important roles in development, tissue homeostasis, diseases and drug responses. Caspase-9 is a central member of caspases (cystein-dependent aspartate-specific proteases) family, which is the initiator of apoptosis. Several studies have shown that many plant-derived natural products could increase the expression of caspase-9 by intrinsic or mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis, induce the tumor cells to death, and then reach the purpose of anti-tumor effects. This review summarizes caspase-9 structure and caspase-9 functions in intrinsic pathway of apoptosis, as well as its role in the anti-tumor activities of plant-derived natural products.
