    Network pharmacology-based virtual screening of the active ingredients and potential targets from Crataegus pinnatifda against Parkinson’s disease

    Parkinson’s disease (PD), as a common neurodegenerative disorder, has brought a heavy economic burden to healthcare system around the world. However, currently there is still lack of effective treatment for PD patients. In this study, we used a docking weighted network pharmacological approach to understand the therapeutic potentiality of C. pinnatifda against PD. Six compounds, namely huangnin A (SMO-13), leptolepisol D (SMO-12), 7',8'-threo-7R,8R-1-[4-[(2-hydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyl-3- methoxyphenyl)-1-(hydroxymethyl)ethoxy]-3-methoxyphenyl]-1,2,3-propanetriol (SMO-4), huangnin B (SMO-14), Crataegusnin A (SMO-1) and erythro-(7S,8R)-guaiacyl-glycerol-β-O-4'-dihydroconiferyl ether (SMO-26) were predicted to have potential binding therapeutics for PD target proteins, and Myeloperoxidase (5mfa), Alpha-synuclein (3q27), 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1B (4iar) and Glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (1o6l) were found to be the most potential target proteins in terms of docking weighted network pharmacological analysis. We expect that our approach using docking weighted network pharmacological could be applied to predict the pharmacological effectiveness of C. pinnatifda against PD.

    Antioxidant Activity of Pithecellobium clypearia (Jack) Benth dry branches and leaves

    Several studies are going on worldwide directed towards finding natural antioxidants from plant origin. Literature reviews suggested that Pithecellobium clypearia shows strong free radical scavenging activity against various types of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, it is necessary to identify selective antioxidant agents from this plant. Phytochemical investigation of Pithecellobium clypearia led to the isolation of 20 known flavonoids. We studied in vitro antioxidant effect and free radical scavenging activity of these known flavonoids. The result showed that compared with the standard, compound 17 exhibited potent antioxidant activity in DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays. Moreover, the FRAP value of compound 13 displayed strong activity.

    Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle, is widely used in Chinese traditional medicine, belonging to Ailanthus genus of Simarubaceae family. Its rhizome and bark can be used as medicines for colds, bleeding, and gastric diseases. Researches have shown that the main chemical constituents of A. altissima are quassinoids, indole and β-carboline alkaloids, sterides, terpenoids, and other compounds. This article is going to make an overview of the chemical constituents, biological activities of A. altissima and this review will be useful to make a further research and development of this plant.

    Eurycoma longifolia also known as tongkat ali, is widely used as a traditional herbal medicine for its aphrodisiac property and anti-malaria effect. It is a shrub or tree belonging to Eurycoma genus of Simaroubaceae family, and native to Indonesia and Malaysia. Phytochemistry researches reported that the main chemical constituents of E. longifolia are quassinoids and alkaloids. This article is presented as a review on the crucial components of E. longifolia for the further research and development of the plant.
