    Content determination of saponins and HS-GC/MS analysis of volatile components in Chinese Shizhu Panax of different growth years

    HPLC and headspace-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS) were used to investigate the content of saponins and volatile components in Chinese Shizhu Panax of different growth years. 82 components were isolated from Chinese Shizhu Panax, 69 components of them were successfully identified. They mainly contained monoterpenes, alkanes and sesquiterpenoids, of which sesquiterpenoids were the main components. The results indicated that the content of saponins in Chinese Shizhu Panax of different growth years was dissimilar and diverse. The content of total saponins can be enriched when properly prolonging the growth years of Chinese Shizhu Panax. However, the content of ginsenosides can reach the level in the fifth year according to Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The volatile components in Chinese Shizhu Panax of different growth years also differ in content, type and proportion of compounds to a certain degree.

    Isolation and characterization of lignans from the leaves of Isatis indigotica Fortune

    A phytochemical investigation of 80% EtOH exact of Isatis indigotica Fortune leaves yielded ten lignans (1–10), including six furofurans lignans (1–6), one arylnaphthalenes lignans (7) and three tetrahydrofurans lignans (8–10). Their structures were determined by HRESIMS spectroscopic data and extensive NMR analyses. Among them, compounds 6, 9 and 10 were isolated from the genus of Isatis for the first time.

    Thirteen xanthones were isolated from L. rotatum, which were established as 1,8-dihydroxy-3,4,5-trimethoxyxanthone (1); 1-hydroxy-3,7,8-trimethoxyxanthone (2); 8-hydroxy-1,3,5-trimethoxyxanthone(3); 1-hydroxy-3,4,5-trimethoxyxanthone (4); 1-hydroxy-3,5,8-trimethoxyxanthone (5); 1,4,8-trihydroxy-5,6-dimethoxyxanthone (6); 1,3,8-trihydroxy-4,7-dimethoxyxanthone (7); 1,8-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyxanthone (8); 1-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyxanthone (9); 1-hydroxy-2,3,4,5-tetramethoxyxanthone (10); 1-hydroxy-2,3,4,7-tetramethoxyxanthone (11); 1,7-dihydroxy-3,8-dimethoxyxanthone (12) ; rel-1,3,5,8-tetrahydroxy- 2,4,6,7-tetrahydroxanthen-9-one (13). Compounds 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 are reported for the first time from Lomatogonium. Furthermore, the activity of xanthones was assessed.

    Eight compounds, (+)-syringaresinol (1), apigenin (2), 3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydxyphenylpropanol (3), 3,4,5-trimethoxy benzoic acid (4), ferulaic acid (5), trans-p-hydroxycinnamic methyl ester (6), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenz-oic acid (7) and p-methoxy benzoic acid (8) were isolated from the 70% ethanol extract of the whole herb of Elephantopus scaber L. The structures of all compounds were identified by spectral data analysis. All compounds were obtained for the first time from Elephantopus scaber L..

    “Yi” is defined in traditional Chinese medicine theory as the general pathological conditions of epidemics. Throughout thousands of years of history, TCM has been playing an essential role in preventing and treating epidemics in China. Showing significant efficacy against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2002 and 2003, a medical intervention involving TCM was applied at the beginning of the pandemic of the corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and has been found with good preventive and curative value in clinical practice. In this study, the etiology and pathogenic mechanism of COVID-19 was discussed on a TCM theory basis, and the clinically effective prevention and treatment methods/prescriptions were summarized. It is suggested that TCM has been playing a unique and vital role in preventing and treating COVID-19, and thus contributes greatly to public health.

    More and more attention has been paid to the polysaccharide components of Glehnia littoralis. It has good immunoregulation, antioxidant, antitumor, hypoglycemic and other biological activities, as well as special health care functions. Therefore, it has a broad application prospect in medical, health care, food and other industries. In this paper, the extraction, purification, content determination and pharmacological activities of polysaccharides from Glehnia littoralis were reviewed, which provided a gauge for the further development and utilization of Glehnia littoralis.
